In the fast-paced world of utility marking, experience and expertise are crucial factors that can make all the difference. When it comes to setting the standard for utility marking, one company stands out from the rest: Premax. With a rich history dating back to 1922, Premax’s extensive industry experience has solidified their reputation as a reliable and trusted partner.
Premax was founded in 1922 as the Niagara Metal Stamping Co in Niagara Falls, NY, initially operating as a job shop stamping house. However, the company quickly recognized the opportunity in property marking across various industries, including utilities, railroads, manufacturing, housing, and vehicle numbering. This shift in focus prompted the company’s renaming to Premax, symbolizing the exceptional quality of their products.
Premax’s dedication to excellence attracted the attention of the Chisholm-Ryder Company, a leading manufacturer of farming equipment at the time. As a result, Premax was acquired and established as a division under Chisholm-Ryder, opening doors to a wider range of product offerings. The merger allowed Premax to manufacture tent stakes, fishing rods and reels, and water sprinkler systems, expanding their footprint in various industries.
Premax’s commitment to service, quality, and durability led to their marking systems being selected as the only allowable pole marking system under the Rural Electrification Administration in 1935. This recognition made Premax instrumental in the electrification of America, solidifying their position as a pioneer in utility asset marking. During World War II, Premax also played a vital role by becoming a certified supplier of PT boat antennas, supporting the war effort.
Following the war, Premax shifted its focus to the utility marking industry. This strategic decision allowed the company to provide an even greater range of marking products. Premax developed UV-resistant enamels and improved manufacturing processes, ensuring their markers stood up to the test of time. In 1996, Premax relocated its operations to Medina, Minnesota, after many successful years in business. Notably, the retirement of Mrs. Finley, an esteemed employee who dedicated sixty-nine years to Premax, marked a significant milestone during this period.
With the passage of time, Premax’s capabilities expanded, and in 2022, the company moved to Amery, Wisconsin, where it joined forces with sister companies Noble-X, Inc., and MRL Manufacturing. This consolidation allowed Premax to further enhance its offerings and continue providing customers with embossed aluminum characters that meet the highest standards of durability and longevity. With over 800 million markers provided to the utility industry, Premax proudly stands as the Grandfather of the utility marking industry.
